Chinese regulators have banned the country’s companies from purchasing artificial intelligence chips manufactured by NVIDIA. This move is part of China’s broader strategy to strengthen its domestic semiconductor industry and compete more effectively with the United States. NVIDIA, based in California, is the world’s most valuable chipmaker. The company’s CEO has expressed disappointment over the ban. Joining to discuss the issue is Sourabh Gupta from the Institute for China-America Studies. He explains why microchips are at the center of the competition between the U.S. and China, what is at stake, and why American companies continue to sell these vital technologies to a key competitor like China.
